India is not the first country to take action against the TikTok.

After weeks of speculation and legal tussle, the final decision came out. Google and Apple has removed Chinese internet firm bytedance’s social media app tiktok from the play store and app store following directions of the ministry of electronics and information technology to do so, after an order by the Madras high court on April 3 to prohibit its downloads.

The popular app used by teenagers for the creation and sharing of short videos was available on application stores of both Google and apple until Tuesday evening,

Is it the first country india banned the app……?

India isn’t the first country seeking a ban on tiktok. In fact, authorities in indonesia went ahead and banned tiktok last july. Reasons for the tiktok ban were “pornography, inappropriate content and blasphemy,” according to a Reuters report. Tiktok also faced criticism in the us where the app was accused of exposing young girls to inappropriate comments.

In february, us federal trade commission (FTC) slapped a fine of $5.7 million (rs40 crore) on the app to settle allegations of child privacy law violations. The app has been accused of collecting personal data from users under the age of 13 without seeking parental consent. This is the largest civil penalty the FTC has ever collected in a children’s privacy case.
The magnitude of such issues is much bigger in India given that the country is tiktok’s the largest market, accounting for almost 40% of the app’s 500 million user base. The current ban, though, does not impact tiktok’s existing users in India.

As per recent reports, in a disturbing turn of events, a 19-year-old was killed by his friends while they tried to record a tiktok video. Three friends were recording a tiktok video on their way back from India gate in Delhi, when one of them accidentally shot 19-year-old Salman when they hit an uneven patch on the road. Now, that’s taking it too far. We cannot hold an app accountable for criminal activities or accidents but it is getting harder to look away from the unpleasant situations youngsters are getting into in lieu of shooting a random tiktok video during their leisure time.

The bench of chief justice of India Ranjan gogoi and justice Sanjiv khanna has listed the case for April 22, on which date the court will be apprised of the developments that take place at the Madras high court
